The Necessary Journey Reviews

Dr. Ella Washington’s book, ‘The Necessary Journey,’ not only delves into her substantial experience and accomplishments in the realm of education and corporate DEI but also provides invaluable insights on turning aspirations into tangible actions for the vital work ahead in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This book is one I’ll be referring to often in my work.

– Susan E Kingman

In a time where there is DEI fatigue, anti-wokeness, and dilution of mission, Dr. Washington reinvigorates our hearts and minds with this excellent story-driven approach to equity and inclusion. She doesn’t just share stories, she analyzes the history, summarizes the research, and creates opportunities to apply best practices for meaningful outcomes. I cannot recommend this book enough.

– Dr. Charis Chambers

This is the best book I have read on how organizations can better deliver on their DEI efforts. It has great advice for organziations of all sizes, wherever they are on this journey. It opens with a nice review of the evolution of Diversity, D&I and DEI from the 1960s to the present, and considers things in a global versus US-centric perspective. There are several case studies of named companies, with the companies being brave enough to share what has worked, and what still needs more work. I recommend it to anyone trying to advance their efforts in this area. Great work Ella!
