How Strong Is Your Career Playbook?

A career playbook is a framework that sets you up for success in work and life.

In sports, a playbook is a set of formations and actions coaches use to respond to their competitors’ game strategies. These coaches build playbooks based on their experience and knowledge of how other teams often perform. A strong playbook anticipates as many situations as possible with the fewest number of rules.

Playbooks are metaphors for the strategies we use in work and life. They begin with core values rooted in our childhood, identity, faith, and professional principles.

We refer to our playbooks when we must make important decisions or plan for the future. The strongest leaders go beyond the mission statements of their current employers. They also align their personal values with their professional goals so they know their decisions are consistent with the kind of person they aspire to be.

How strong is your career playbook? Do you carry purpose-driven values from one workplace to another, or do you find yourself adopting the values your employers and clients expect? Are you intentional about developing your skills to align with your goals?
